What You Need To Know About Hair Transplant Infection

A common question and concern from many people before they get their hair transplant is regarding infection. Bacteria and fungi are common organisms that can enter the body, multiply and cause infection. The chances of getting an infection from a hair transplant is around 1% and can be reduced even lower if you follow our post-operation guidance and advice. Poor hygiene and living/working in unsanitary conditions are the prime cause of infection after a hair transplant. This is why it is extremely important that you follow the guidance given by your surgeon.

Bacteria, fungi, and viruses are everywhere. The COVID-19 situation will have made everyone well aware of the importance of personal hygiene to stop the spread of viruses, infections, and the like.

    Are Hair Transplant Infections Common?

As mentioned above, the likelihood of getting an infection after a hair transplant is extremely low, (around 1%). The advancements in modern hair transplant methodology have made the procedure much less invasive than older techniques such as FUT. We only work with world-class surgeons and award-winning hospitals. You can rest assured that your hair transplant procedure will take place in extremely sanitised and professional facilities.

    Signs Of Hair Transplant Infection

The typical signs of infection from a hair transplant are redness, swelling, itchiness, and discomfort. These side-effects are normal after a couple of days following your procedure, however, if they continue to appear after a week or get worse, immediately contact your surgeon.

    Causes Of Hair Transplant Infection

    • Sanitized Environment – The first major cause of hair transplant infection is due to unsanitized operating environments. Your hair transplant procedure, like any other medical procedure, must be carried out in a well-satisfied environment with attention to hygiene and cleanliness.
    • Following Post-Op Guidance – The second major cause of hair transplant infection is when the patient fails to follow the post-op guidance correctly and consistently. If you fail to follow the guidance, you are putting yourself at risk of infection. Please read below to see our prevention and treatment tips following your hair transplant.

    Prevention And Treatment

To prevent hair transplant infections, it is essential that your procedure takes place in a well-sanitized and clean environment.  The next step is aftercare and personal hygiene. If these two elements are covered and practiced well, then you should not have to worry about getting an infection.

    • No Scratching – Avoid scratching and rubbing your scalp after your hair transplant as it is important that you don’t irritate the fresh grafts and scabs. Your head may be itchy, but this will only last for a few days.
    • Professional Clinic – This aspect is vital to preventing infection and therefore you should ensure that your procedure is being carried out by a professional and clean clinic.
    • Avoid Smoking And Alcohol – Toxins such as alcohol and the components inside cigarette smoke are more likely to weaken your immune system and enable bacteria to more easily enter and reproduce in your body. Until your transplant has fully healed, we highly recommend that you avoid alcohol and smoking.
    • Avoid Swimming And Exercise – Humid and sweaty environments such as the pool and gymnasium are perfect areas for bacteria to grow. The chemicals in the pool can also be harsh on your scalp and cause unwanted irritation and redness. Please wait one week before attempting to exercise and a further 2-3 weeks before swimming.
    • Avoid Dusty, Unhygienic, and Humid Environments – If you work in an environment like a kitchen and building site – you may need a further week off work. These conditions can be rife with bacteria and harmful to your sensitive scalp. In addition, avoid wearing a hat or cap as this can increase the chances of infection.
