The Shedding Effect of Minoxidil and Finasteride

Shedding Effect of Minoxidil and Finasteride

You have surely heard of the Shedding effect in hair loss treatments. We will explain everything about it. From the outset, it is important that you know that the use of any treatment to combat hair loss will not be immediate, all require a process. Although some are faster and more noticeable than others.

Shedding is the effect that occurs when using certain medications against alopecia. This alteration in the hair growth cycle is also known as Telogen Effluvium or Shock Loss

This effect is part of the procedure of some drugs and it is totally normal for it to occur in the patient. It is a temporary process. The products that generate this Shedding effect are Minoxidil and Finasteride. This also happens with hair transplantation. However, the duration of the Shedding effect in hair transplantation is much shorter.

Shedding is the process of transition of the follicle from a growth phase to a resting phase, and then to grow again. The treatment stimulates the hair follicle and stops its activity and restarts the hair cycle (fall, rest and growth). This means that the hairs, both weak and strong, fall more or less massively and above what is considered normal  (50 to 100 hairs per day is considered normal). This does not mean that the hair follicle is being damaged.

What are the differences and similarities between these drugs?

Both Minoxidil and finasteride are used in the early stages of androgenetic alopecia, when a decrease in the density and amount of hair begins to be perceived. These drugs are not designed to combat more advanced or total baldness, since it only acts on the hair follicles in which there is life.

These treatments must be used for life in a daily way, since their interruption will alter the effect and result of the medications.

Both treatments have the same objective: to prevent hair loss. However, they do it differently:

Minoxidil is applied as a gel or spray, once or twice a day. It is a vasodilator, so its function is to facilitate the blood flow, more nutrients will arrive and the hair follicle will be healthier, thus avoiding its fall. Acts on the scalp directly, stimulating it.

Finasteride is taken orally. Its function is to block the enzyme alpha reductase, the cause of transforming testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the genetic trigger for androgenetic alopecia, preventing hair loss. Modifies hormones, preventing the progression of baldness.

Minoxidil is considered less aggressive, although it can also lead to allergic reactions or the appearance of skin hair in women

In contrast, finasteride is considered stronger. However, it is highly discouraged for women, as although it targets a specific hormone in a mild way, it can be quite influential for women.

These drugs are considered the most effective by the scientific community. Although, its effectiveness depends on each person, so a specialist is required to evaluate the characteristics of the patient to know what degree of effectiveness can be expected with each treatment. According to certain studies, finasteride is more effective against hair loss (80% of cases), compared to minoxidil (15% -60% of cases).

The beginning of this effect depends on the product used and the characteristics of the hair follicle of each person. This does not occur in all patients, but in the majority. When you start this use of medications, you will experience this drop in the first weeks and even months. After this, you will have to wait another period of time for the hair to grow back stronger. The first visible results are from the sixth month or sometimes even after the year.

This procedure should be temporary. If the Shedding effect lasts longer than 3-4 months, it is necessary to reflect on the cause of hair loss, as it can be generated by other problems such as stress, hair diseases, rejection of medication, drug irregularities…

This shock loss effect leads many people to abandon these medications since they not only have the feeling that they are not gaining hair, but they also have the perception that they are losing more hair more quickly. It is hard to notice that hair loss is increased when exactly the opposite is intended. Many patients come to believe that the medicine does not work for them, that their body is not responding as it should and that it is harming them instead of benefiting them. However, this is a sign that the procedure is working. So if you want to undergo this procedure, you must know and be prepared to live this experience.

After a hair transplant, hair loss can occur. In this case you are not losing your own weak hair, but the hair from the transplanted follicles.

Keep in mind that in the first 10 days after the surgical intervention, the scalp has to heal, the swelling and scabs have to disappear. Then, around 100 days, the hair will grow weakly and timidly and will fall out again. After this, the hair will grow back strong and thick, showing the mane you want. This is a normal process, the hair follicle undergoes for its stabilization.

To do this, at Revival Hair  Transplant we offer treatments that help hair regrowth such as platelet-enriched plasma microinjections (PRP) and mesotherapy (MesoHair).

Can hair fall out after hair grafting? No. The hair follicles implanted in the receiving area of the head are free of the alopecia gene. Therefore, the hair will not be lost again and will continue its normal growth cycle. Therefore, we can say that hair transplantation is the total and definitive solution. You will have no more worries after having a hair transplant intervention.
